Star of David Series
2010/2011
Wire & Threads - Jerusalem of Gold
"Jerusalem of Gold" Hebrew: ירושלים של זהב, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav. A popular Israeli song written by Naomi Shemer in 1967. It describes the jewish people's 2000 years longing to return to Jerusalem. The final verse decribes the Six Day War to celebrate Jerusalem's reunification after 19 years of occupation. This is were the use of gold and other metallic colors find their way into this series of paintings depicting a Star Of David enclosed in metal wires and threads.
The Wire Series is a brand new series of paintings reflecting that ideal Jerusalem bathed in glorious gold. A peaceful and proud city united as one, the center of all nations, connecting the Earth to the Universe. The idea of universal peace amongs humans originating in Jerusalem seems an evidence to me.
The wire and threads represents barb wire that seems inherent to Jewish history, the persecution of Jews is a constant underlying component of their narative . The bold and bright colors used in these paintings are meant to be a celebration of this premier symbol of the Jewish nation in Israel. It has been the source of so much hardship during the war, it is now a joy to be able to display it openly in different art forms.
